Wilston State School issues ‘stranger danger’ alert

Parents at Wilston State School have been warned to be vigilant after two children were approached by a man offering them a lift home in two separate incidents.

Missing children: what does "missing" actually mean?

A principal of an inner-city state primary school has issued an urgent ‘stranger danger’ warning after students were approached by a man offering them a lift home.

In an email to parents, Wilston State School principal Jude Fountain said the separate incidents were a timely reminder of stranger danger.

“It has been brought to my attention that two children have recently disclosed to their parents incidents of being approached by a stranger,” the email read.

“In both incidents the child was approached by a man who offered to take them home.

“Both children did not respond to the stranger and both children reported it to an adult. Both children are OK and followed the correct course of action which was great news.

“However, this is a timely reminder to talk to your children about stranger danger and have a family plan in place if it occurs.”

She said the school had conducted an “age appropriate” lesson on stranger danger as a result.

Ms Fountain urged parents to contact the school or police if there were any further interactions.

Wilston State School, in Grange, an inner city Brisbane suburb, has a student body of about 900.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said no reports of that nature had been received from the Grange area.

A Department of Education spokeswoman said an unknown member of the public had tried to engage in conversation with two different students on their way home from school.

She said the police had been notified, as had other schools in the surrounding suburbs.

“The school has reminded students of personal safety strategies to ensure student awareness is heightened when travelling to and from school,” she said.

She said student and staff safety and wellbeing was the department’s highest priority.
