A evangelical religious group that has attempted exorcisms on children has quietly moved its controversial event that was advertised as being hosted at a Brisbane state high school.
Cavendish Road State High School at Holland Park was until this week listed to host The Last Reformation to “train and activate new disciples”.
The group has previously made international headlines for attempting exorcisms on children, while its founder is in jail in the United States.
It has also claimed to have the power to “heal” autistic children.
The event drew major backlash on social media with users saying it was highly inappropriate for a school to be used.
A department of education spokesman confirmed Cavendish Road State High School had received a request to hire the school hall from the faith group for the September event.
However, the spokesman said the request was not accepted by the school prior to the event being publicly advertised.
“The school will not be facilitating the event on school grounds and have advised the
organisers to make alternate arrangements and amend promotional materials on the event
location,” the spokesman said.
The spokesman said the department was not aware of any future The Last Reformation events planned at other state schools.
TLR Kickstart Brisbane, hosted by Jon Bjarnastein, is now set to be at an undisclosed location at Brunswick St, New Farm from September 9-10.
According to the event flyer, people will be “trained and activated to step out in faith, healing the sick, preaching the Gospel, baptising in water and in the Holy Spirit, and making disciples”.
“You will receive solid Bible teaching, and we will also go out on the streets in small groups to help “kick start” you,” it read.
“In the Book of Acts, we read that God was using ordinary people to do extraordinary things. The church was growing fast and believers were being filled with the Holy Spirit, and the disciples preached, healed, delivered and baptised in water and the Holy Spirit ….
“Yes. We believe this is still for today and for every believer who wants to be a disciple of the lord Jesus.”
A Reddit thread expressed serious concern at the potential for Cavendish Road State High School to be used to host the group.
“Am I reading this right: a religious group that performs child exorcism is travelling to Australia and has been allowed to use Cavendish Road SHS to recruit followers?” the post read.
The thread triggered nearly 100 comments.
“What in the bible belt is this bulls--t?” one comment read.
“It says they ‘go out into the streets’. What does that even mean? They harass passers by? This is definitely a concern that should be raised against having them at any state school in the entire country,” another said.
School facilities are available for appropriate community use outside of school hours, when not required for school purposes.
