Pro-Palestine supporters have stormed a building at the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus during a tense rally, with a classroom window smashed after a bollard was thrown at it.
It comes after Premier Steven Miles warned protesters not to overstep the mark amid escalating tensions between Palestine supporters and Jewish students and staff.
The hundred-strong pro-Palestinian group descended on the Hawken Engineering Building about midday, entering the courtyard while classes were held in neighbouring rooms.
It’s understood a man threw a bollard at a classroom window, shattering it.
It follows claims of security guards being assaulted and the office of a Jewish academic being urinated on during rising tensions between pro-Palestinian and Israel encampments
Activists during today’s protest could be heard chanting “Out, out Boeing out” and “shame, shame UQ” through the campus.
Security could be seen standing at the entrance of the Boeing centre while crowds formed outside.
UQ student Benjamin Ganko said he saw a man in a dark green raincoat and a hood walk off after throwing a bollard at the window.
About 50 students were inside the shared study space when the incident happened.
It’s understood the man tried to take a first bollard but was unsuccessful and picked up a second and threw it at the window.
“I heard it and then saw him walk off, there was students right next to the glass,” Mr Ganko said.
“It’s pretty hard to study here when there when it’s loud and obviously that didn’t help.”
“Security were told not to retaliate, they let him take it and kept walking.”
Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather spoke to the group on a megaphone.
“Standing behind us is Boeing, Boeing is Boeing planes, Boeing missiles and Boeing weapons that are tearing apart human flesh and that are destroying and taking lives, Palestinian lives,” Mr Chandler-Max said.
A “F**K Boeing” sign was written in chalk and posted on a building.
