Taylor Swift Australia concerts: Brisbane high school considers moving exams to avoid clash with Sydney and Melbourne shows

Taylor Swift is possibly the biggest superstar in the world, so big there’s a chance she could blow up this year’s Year 12 exams in Queensland.

Airlines and hotels accused of price gouging for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in Australia

So much is the popularity of global superstar Taylor Swift that a Brisbane public school is considering scheduling its Year 12 exams around students attending interstate concerts.

And The Courier-Mail is investigating if other schools are considering a similar move.

Wynnum State High School asked parents last week to notify the school if their child would be unable to sit the week six exam block set for February 27 to March 1.

In an email sent to parents, obtained by independent publication InQueensland, the school said it would “endeavour to schedule the exams your child sits later in the week”.

It comes after Brisbane Swifties were left devastated when the pop icon snubbed Brisvegas for her upcoming Eras tour in February.

Swift has previously sold out shows in Brisbane but will only perform a combined five shows in Melbourne and Sydney forcing diehard fans to travel.

A Department of Education spokesman said the email was to “gauge the possible impact of a Taylor Swift concert on student attendance” and “scheduling of exams so this could potentially be factored in.”

The Wynnum State High School’s deputy principal said they had been informed that several students would be interstate attending one of the Swift concerts.

“It has been communicated to students and families on a number of occasions that holidays are not to be taken during term time in Year 12,” it read.

“I have been informed that a number of students will be interstate on the previous weekend and some up until Tuesday, February 27 attending one of the Taylor Swift concerts.

“The dates of the exam block cannot be changed, however we are not unreasonable and propose the following: The timetable in the exam block is flexible, however all students must sit the same exams at the same time.

“If your child will not be in Brisbane on the Tuesday (February 27), please let me know by Monday January 29. We will endeavour to schedule the exams your child will sit later in the week.”

A Department of Education spokesman said claims that block exam dates at the school were being changed due to a Taylor Swift concert were inaccurate.

“At no time has the school implied the dates will change or that students will sit the same exam at different times,” the spokesman said.

“No exams have been moved. The times and days of individual exams within the block exam have not been set yet. This will happen two weeks prior to the exam block.”

The spokesman said individual schools consider many factors when scheduling students’ assessment times and that they have flexibility within the dates to place the internal assessment as “best fits subjects, supervision and students”.

“As is standard practice across schools, it is not unreasonable for the principal to understand student arrangements during exam periods to ensure they are catering for students while ensuring adherence to QCAA requirements,” he said.

He encouraged any parents with concerns to speak with the school.

“Students who are aware in advance that they may be absent during an exam period, need to inform the school so appropriate arrangements can be put in place,” he said.

“Forward thinking and proactive engagement with students and families occurring before locking in the dates for exams demonstrates collaborative planning with the community.”
