St Philomena School and John Paul College are the top performing NAPLAN schools in Logan.
An independent analysis of five years of NAPLAN results has revealed the schools which consistently performed the best in the Year 5 and Year 9 tests between 2017 and 2021.
Over that five-year period, John Paul College, in Daisy Hill, had higher Year 5 yearly results than any other school in the Logan, scoring an average of 2627.0 each year.
St Philomena School in Park Ridge was the second best for the region with an average score of 2601.8, while Canterbury College in Waterford was the third best with an average score of 2525.5.
The top performing Year 9 school was St Philomena School, in Park Ridge, where the average yearly result was 3100.5 over the five years.
Canterbury College in Waterford was the second best for the region with an average score of 3006.0, while John Paul College in Daisy Hill was the third best with an average score of 2982.3.
To determine how each school performed between 2017 and 2021, their average scores for each year were combined and the yearly average found.
John Paul College principal Karen Spiller said she was delighted with the achievement of both students and staff.
“I acknowledge that these tests are point in time tests and represent student performance at that time, however note that the NAPLAN results provide teachers and the school with critical data about student achievement in the key life skills of literacy and numeracy,’’ Ms Spiller said.
“It is for this reason that we are so pleased that the results have seen such a significant improvement.
“Our academic strengthening program has seen a focus on reading, writing and numeracy in particular as a basis for all student learning both in our primary and secondary schools.
“We also have a strong focus on a school wide pedagogy (or teaching practice) and support for the professional growth and development of our teachers.’’
Canterbury College principal, Daniel Walker, said they focused on the performance of individual students, not entire year levels.
“We’ve been on a journey of getting a really good snapshot of each student’s achievements,’’ Mr Walker said.
“With the right data at the right time, at the fingertips of teachers, they now know what buttons to push to get the best out of each student. It’s very individualised learning.’’
Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled in either year, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects in either year were excluded from the analysis.
The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.
