The popularity of a southside Catholic primary school in the upmarket leafy suburb of Daisy Hill could account for it recording the highest student-to-teacher ratio in Logan.

St Edward the Confessor School, on busy Chatswood Rd, recorded the most crowded classrooms in Logan in 2021 based on data from the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.

The school, which had 561 students enrolled and 30.1 full-time equivalent teachers, had a student teacher ratio of one teacher for every 18.8 students.

That was higher than the national ratio of 13.3 students for every teacher.

It also was above the national average of 14.5 for primary schools.

According to ACARA the national student-teacher ratio in 2021 for secondary schools was 11.9.

The second highest student-teacher ratio in Logan was at Groves Christian College at Kingston, where there was one teacher for an average of 17.4 students.

It had 1566 students enrolled and 89.9 full-time equivalent teachers in 2021.

At St Matthew’s, a primary school at Cornubia, there were 17.2 students for every teacher, the third highest in the Logan region.

It had 554 students enrolled and 32.2 full-time equivalent teachers.

Loganholme State School had one full-time teacher for every 17 students while the new Greenbank State School had 16.8 students per teacher.

St Mary’s School had 16.6 students per teacher, while Emmaus College at Jimboomba had 16.5 students per teacher.

St Bernardine’s Catholic School at Regents Park had 16.5 students per full-time teacher and Woodhill State School on Mt Lindesay Highway had 16.2 students per teacher.

The national data revealed Catholic schools had the more crowded primary school classrooms.

Catholic schools had a student-to-teacher ratio for primary schools of 15.4, followed by 14.4 for state schools and 14 for independent schools.

At the high school level, state schools had the highest ratio with 12.4, followed by Catholic with 12.2 and 10.5 for independent schools.

The Logan region’s least crowded classroom was at Carbrook Animal Assisted Learning Centre where there was an average of seven students for each teacher at the school.

The Christian independent special assistance school, designed for students disengaged from mainstream schooling, had 16 students enrolled and 2.3 full-time equivalent teachers in 2021.

Student-teacher ratios do not take into account teacher aides or non-teaching staff at schools and only include full-time equivalent teachers.

Daisy Hill, bordered by growth suburbs of Springwood, Shailer Park and Chatswood, has experienced a population surge with young families moving into the highly-sought-after area, according to 2021 data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

This year, hundreds of teaching positions were going unfilled at the start of the school year with 130 schools struggling to find staff and regional areas failing to attract teachers.
