Sunshine Coast Grammar School and Matthew Flinders Anglican College have been revealed as the region’s top performing NAPLAN schools in 2024.
An independent analysis of newly-released 2024 NAPLAN results has revealed the schools which performed the best in the Year 5 and Year 9 tests.
Matthew Flinders Anglican College, in Buderim, had the best primary results on the Sunshine Coast, scoring an average of 538.4.
Immanuel Lutheran College in Buderim was the second best for the region with an average score of 537.6, while St Andrew’s Anglican College in Peregian Springs was the third best with an average score of 524.0.
The top performing secondary school was Sunshine Coast Grammar School, in Forest Glen, with an average of 605.2.
Matthew Flinders Anglican College in Buderim was the second best for the region with an average score of 604.0, while Caloundra City Private School in Pelican Waters was the third best with an average score of 603.2.
Matthew Flinders Anglican College principal Michelle Carroll said it was rewarding to have her students “consistently attain” high levels of literacy and numeracy in the national measure.
“Across our primary and secondary schools, we stand by the high quality of our educational programs and teaching practices focused on students’ deep learning, engagement and wellbeing,” Ms Carroll said.
Sunshine Coast Grammar School principal Mrs Anna Owen credited the school’s success to the collective effort of students, teachers and families, highlighting the strength of its academic programs and supportive community.
“These results reflect the strength of our teaching and learning programs, the dedication of our teachers, commitment of our students and support by our families,” Mrs Owen said.
Immanuel Lutheran College principal Eloise Beveridge said all their students learnt at their own pace, and NAPLAN served as part of their “focus on the development of the whole child and the overall learning experience, academically, socially and in co-curricular areas”.
“Our college believes that our students are on a continual learning journey and assessments such as NAPLAN are a snapshot in time, providing us with feedback on the progress of our students,” she said.
“At Immanuel Lutheran College, we encourage students to always try their best, be reflective in their learning and challenge themselves.”
Caloundra City Private School principal Leon van Niekerk said their “true success” revolved around building learning skills rather than preparing for tests.
The school’s approach prioritises critical thinking, problem-solving and adaptability, which equips students for tests such as NAPLAN, he said.
“Two of our core values are learning and excellence, which both inspire our students to consistently strive to do their best, even in challenges they may not necessarily enjoy, such as sitting for standardised tests,” Mr Van Niekerk said.
“This commitment to excellence, combined with our innovative approach to education, has helped our Year 9 students achieve the third-highest NAPLAN results in the region — a testament to their hard work and determination.
“We are extremely proud of their achievement and the dedication of our entire school community.”
To determine how each school performed in 2024, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort (Yr 5 or Yr 9) were combined and the average found.
Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects were excluded from the analysis.
The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.
