Queensland’s top 150 schools for 2023 ranked

Private schools outside of Brisbane have recorded the greatest improvements in the latest Queensland top 150 high school reveal, an independent analysis has revealed.
Independent specialist schools website Better Education has released the latest Queensland’s best schools rankings – a compilation of public and private schools between Years 7-10.
The state overall score, used to rank the secondary institutions, is calculated using the school’s Year 9 English and Maths test results in 2023. A score of 100 is the highest, 60 is the lowest.
The 2023 split of public and private schools remained similar to the 2022 list, with 29 state schools in 2023’s top 150, compared to 30 state schools that made the cut the year before.
The top four remained unchanged – Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology; Brisbane Grammar School; Brisbane Girls Grammar; and Brisbane State High.
Somerville House and St Peters Lutheran College, both in the River City, both climbed four spots into fifth and sixth respectively.
AB Paterson College on the Gold Coast rose by nine places to break into the top 15.
Five other public schools muscled into the top 50 alongside some of the state’s priciest private schools - Mansfield State High, Indooroopilly State High, Kelvin Grove State College, Brisbane South Secondary College, and Cavendish Road State High.
But the biggest movers were Annandale Christian College in Townsville which shot up 74th into 34th on 2023’s list, St Luke’s Anglican School in Bundaberg rose from 82 to 71, and Tamborine Mountain State High School in the Scenic Rim climbed 42 rankings into 74th.
Other major improvements were seen at Immanuel Lutheran College on the Sunshine Coast going from 69th to a ranking of 33, while Ipswich’s Springfield Anglican College rose from 83 to 52, and St Andrew’s Lutheran College on the Gold Coast climbed from 105 to 70.
Highlands Christian College in Toowoomba also made notable progress rising from 148th to 88th, Prince of Peace Lutheran College in Brisbane’s north climbed 50 rankings to claim 99th, and Mary MacKillop College also on Brisbane’s northside went from 137 ranking to 111.
Padua College in Brisbane’s north and Brisbane South Secondary College in Dutton Park didn’t make the cut in 2022, but debuted in the 2023 rankings inside the top 50.
Also among the 19 new entries in the 2023 rankings were Samford Valley Steiner School, Gold Coast Christian College, Clayfield College, Charters Towers School of Distance Education, and Unity College on the Sunshine Coast.
