Public schools have ranked alongside elite private colleges to be named the Sunshine Coast’s top academic performers in new NAPLAN results released today.

Immanuel Lutheran College and Matthew Flinders Anglican College are Sunshine Coast’s top performing NAPLAN schools.

An independent analysis of newly-released 2023 NAPLAN results has revealed the schools which performed the best in the Year 5 and Year 9 tests.

Matthew Flinders Anglican College, in Buderim, had the best primary school results than any other in the Sunshine Coast, scoring an average of 541.8 this year.

Montville State School in Montville was the second best for the region with an average score of 537.0, while Immanuel Lutheran College in Buderim was the third best with an average score of 529.8.

The top performing secondary school was Immanuel Lutheran College, in Buderim, where the average result was 610.4.

Sunshine Coast Grammar School in Forest Glen was the second best for the region with an average score of 609.8, while Matthew Flinders Anglican College in Buderim was the third best with an average score of 606.6.

To determine how each school performed in 2023, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort (Yr 5 or Yr 9) were combined and the average found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.

A spokesman from the Department of Education congratulated the approximately 250,000 Queensland students across Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 who sat the annual NAPLAN test earlier this year.

“NAPLAN is just one of many tools used to measure student progress. It does not replace ongoing monitoring and assessment undertaken by teachers, but it can provide additional information about students’ literacy and numeracy progress,” he said.

“NAPLAN provides parents and schools with important information about how students are progressing in developing their literacy and numeracy skills. This information is used as part a broad suite of data that teachers use to inform teaching practices designed to lift literacy and numeracy levels for all students.

“Teachers work incredibly hard ensuring that students are well prepared by focusing on teaching the curriculum, every day. They also ensure that students are familiar with the online test format and provide appropriate support and guidance.”

The department recognised that literacy and numeracy were essential skills for students to progress through school and life.

“To ensure continued improvement in student literacy and numeracy and to enhance teaching capability, teachers in Queensland state schools have access to quality professional learning as well as teaching and learning resources,” the spokesman said.

“In addition, the department announced a Reading Commitment in October 2023 which will see a consistent and evidence-informed approach to the teaching of reading through the Australian Curriculum. This includes a comprehensive suite of reading materials, advice, resources and professional learning available for all state schools.”
