Most improved southwest QLD NAPLAN schools revealed in last 5 years

NAPLAN data reveals increasing education gap

An independent study has used data from MySchool to calculate the most improved primary and secondary schools in NAPLAN over the past five years.

St Monica’s School in Oakey recorded the biggest improvement for a primary school with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results increasing by 8.08 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.

Quinalow Prep-10 State School at Quinalow was the second best with an increase of 6.01 per cent followed by Westmar State School at Westmar with an increase of 5.62 per cent.

Meanwhile, Wallumbilla State School in Wallumbilla recorded the biggest improvement for a secondary school with average year 9 NAPLAN results increasing by 4.56 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.

Cunnamulla P-12 State School at Cunnamulla was the second best with a 4.25 per cent increase followed by Our Lady of the Southern Cross College at Dalby with an increase of 2.9 per cent.

Meanwhile, St George State School in St George recorded the lowest improvement for a primary school with the average Year 5 NAPLAN results returning a result of -14.81 per cent over the past five years of NAPLAN.

While, Chinchilla Christian College in Chinchilla recorded the lowest improvement for a secondary school returning a result of -12.44 per cent over the past five years.

St Monica’s Religious Education assistant principal Rebecca McGregor​​​ said the combination of dedicated teaching staff, the use of student data and a strong focus on literacy contributed to their results.

“Over the last five years, our teachers have engaged with and embedded the expected and effective practices of the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Reading and Writing Improvement strategies,” Ms McGregor said.

“This has led to the creation of engaging, innovative, real-world units of work based on quality literature, high impact classroom pedagogy, regular monitoring of student data, and targeted feedback.”

She said the school’s teaching style aims to build student confidence, resilience, persistence and curiosity towards learning.

“We live learning at St Monica’s, regularly celebrating our student’s achievements with Writers of the Week, Super Learner awards, Spelling Bees and other academic competitions,” she said.

“Our NAPLAN results are a testament to the passion, dedication and expertise of our teachers who work tirelessly to ensure the best outcomes for all of our students.”

South West Queensland top primary school NAPLAN improvers over five years:

St Monica’s School: 8.08 per cent

Quinalow Prep-10 State School: 6.01 per cent

Westmar State School: 5.62 per cent

Sacred Heart Primary School: 5.55 per cent

Charleville State School: 5.45 per cent

South West Queensland top secondary school NAPLAN improvers over five years:

Wallumbilla State School: 4.56 per cent

Cunnamulla P-12 State School: 4.25 per cent

Our Lady of the Southern Cross College: 2.9 per cent

Goondiwindi State High School: 2.5 per cent

Dalby State High School: 2.21 per cent

The analysis compared the five year change in NAPLAN results from 2017 and 2021 and revealed the schools which have improved their Year 5 and Year 9 student scores the most.

It was calculated by each school’s combined results for each NAPLAN subject in 2017 and compared to the same results in 2021.
