The prestigious St Joseph’s Nudgee College has appointed its new principal from within, promoting relative newcomer Scott Thomson to the top job.
Mr Thomson, who started at Nudgee this year as its deputy, was a standout in a strong field of applicants from elite schools around the country. The highly anticipated appointment comes after the shock resignation of long-serving principal Peter Fullagar in September – before his contract was due to expire.
Staff, students and parents at the large Catholic boys’ day and boarding school were notified of the leadership change on Thursday.
Chris Woolley, CEO of EREA (Edmund Rice Education Australia) Colleges Ltd, said the decision was unanimous by the selection panel.
“Scott brings with him a wealth of experience and qualifications in Catholic education,” Mr Woolley said.
“Prior to joining Nudgee College, Scott was the principal of St Joseph’s College Banora Point from 2017 to 2022.
“He also served as assistant principal of St Mary’s Catholic College, Casino.
“In his application, Scott highlighted that he aspires to continue the tradition of providing diverse opportunities and challenges for our students, ensuring they emerge as responsible, resilient, and empathetic young men who know that faith, respect, and compassion form the bedrock of all interactions,” he said.
Mr Thomson addressed students on Thursday and said: “I came here only at the start of this year and I felt the warmth and welcome of this community and l look forward to continuing on the path and journey with you all.”
“At the start of the year one of my main goals was to be known and get to know all of you, the staff, the families, with the students at the centre and in assuming this role as Principal, that will continue. I look forward to moving into 2024 in this role and progressing Nudgee to continue to be the fine institution that it is.”
Mr Thomson will start as principal in 2024, when Mr Fullagar begins his new role as regional director for EREA Colleges Ltd for Queensland, ACT and Tasmania.
Meanwhile, Mr Thomson’s brother Luke Thomson has been appointed principal of fellow EREA school Ignatius Park College in Townsville.
