Logan mum wants more school discipline for daughter

A Logan mum has begged for more discipline from her daughter’s school, saying her education was unravelling with the 12-year-old able to have sex in the school toilets, send nudes and wag class to vape.

Reducing school suspension for bullies is 'no solution at all'

A Logan mother has pleaded with a state high school to properly discipline her daughter after the 12-year-old was able to have sex in school toilets, constantly wag class to vape and send nudes.

The mother claimed Beenleigh State High School had failed to keep her daughter safe or provide her with an adequate education.

She said her daughter has had the freedom to regularly wag to vape, had sex in the school toilets with an older boy and been physically assaulted by former and current students.

She said her daughter’s education had unravelled.

The Department of Education was unable to comment due to privacy reasons but said the Beenleigh school had a strict student code of conduct.

The mother, who cannot be identified, said the school had told her to not bring her daughter to school for the remainder of the year.

She said the school had placed her daughter in the “too hard basket”.

“She’s barely been in class this term. Her missing so much time is not good enough,” the mother said.

“The school seems like they’re hoping it will fix itself.”

The mother said her daughter was “no angel” and was battling several behaviour issues that they were “working on together”.

She now fears her daughter will fall through the cracks without help.

“All I’m asking is during the eight and a half hours, is for her to receive an education and be safe, but they tell me they can’t guarantee this,” she said.

Her frustration with the school led her to emailing a complaint to the Department of Education in a desperate bid for support.

“I have given full support to the school following any disciplinary action against my daughter for her behaviour and followed up with further actions at home. I have been patient and understanding,” the email read.

“Now I am angry and worried about my daughter’s ability to receive an education at this school.”

A Department of Education spokeswoman said Beenleigh State High School continued to work to promote safe and respectful interactions between students and a safe learning environment for everyone in the school community.

She said Beenleigh SHS has a strict student code of conduct which was developed in consultation with the broader community.

It provides detailed information about local school policies on attendance, vaping and the use of student-owned technology at school and the use of social media, including possible consequences when expectations are not met.

“Schools are part of the community and have an important role to play, in partnership with families, to support young people to be safe and respectful to others,” the spokeswoman said.

“Where serious issues arise around any student’s behaviour, their family will be contacted and invited to discuss the concerns and plan an appropriate response.”

She said the school provides weekly engagement and wellbeing strategies, and students had access to guidance officer and supervised lunch breaks.

The mother said she just wanted her daughter to be educated and be safe at school.

“She does have issues. She isn’t the easiest kid but she is a sweet kid and with the right people and the right guidance she will be OK,” she said.

More than 400 students were handed suspensions at Beenleigh SHS in 2021 while 15 were kicked out of the school, its latest annual report showed.
