Three private students from an elite Queensland school who allegedly stole a wheelchair from a disabled man in Japan have been sent back on a plane home from a rugby tour.
An American man living in Japan was in the entertainment district of Kabukicho in Tokyo, when it is alleged that the trio took off with his wheelchair.
Following the incident, the victim shared a photo of the students to social media, in a bid to identify the culprits.
He then reported the alleged incident to police, before informing Ipswich Grammar School after becoming aware the students were from the school.
“Got in contact with the school/coach. I’m going to trust (perhaps naively) they’ll follow up with the kids appropriately,” the man posted.
“They said they’ll get back to me to let me know what the repercussions ultimately were.
Thanks to everyone who helped find them. Basically consider the matter closed.
“Apparently they’re rugby kids from a school in Ipswich.”
An Ipswich Grammar School spokeswoman confirmed it was aware of the incident and that the boys had been kicked off the tour to Japan.
“Ipswich Grammar School has been informed of an incident that occurred in Japan,” a spokeswoman said.
“Following an investigation, the students involved have been removed from the tour.
“We have taken the matter seriously and the school is addressing it as per our policies.”
Ipswich Grammar School is one of nine schools part of the Greater Public Schools Association of Queensland and charges annual fees of about $20,000.
