A major university is expected to formally announce a new campus for 7000 students and 400 staff at the Treasury Casino in Brisbane’s CBD.

Griffith’s CBD Campus at the Treasury Casino is expected to be formally announced in coming weeks with Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner expressing his excitement about the historic site’s future plans.

The major university confirmed its interest in turning the Treasury Casino into a new campus earlier this year.

It is understood the campus would house 7000 students and 400 staff after its anticipated opening in 2027. Mr Schrinner said the casino was a historic part of Brisbane and one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.

“The last thing I want to see is the building sit idle and vacant for years on end, so it’s exciting to hear plans emerging about its future,” he said.

“While it’s a matter for the owners, I’d like to see the Treasury Building continue as a very active part of our city and, importantly, the Queen Street Mall precinct.”

Star Entertainment put the Treasury Casino up for sale at $200m in October last year, but declined to comment on whether a partnership had been finalised with Griffith.

“The Treasury Brisbane is undergoing a sale process,” a Star Entertainment spokeswoman said.

“There has been no announcement and we will advise of the outcome of that sale process at the appropriate time,” she said.

Griffith University already has campuses across the South East, including in Mount Gravatt, Logan, South Bank, Nathan, and the Gold Coast making this its sixth campus.

The university declined to comment.
