Revealed: Queensland schools producing tertiary scholarship students

The next steps in the promising careers of some of Queensland’s star graduates have been revealed. SEE ALL THE NAMES

With Semester 1 university classes either already underway or due to start later this month, the hard work really paid off for some Class of ‘22 graduates.

The Courier-Mail canvassed Queensland schools and asked how many members of the 2022 Year 12 cohort were lucky enough to receive 2023 tertiary scholarships.

Some scholarships are offered depending on the chosen course or ATAR achieved, while other more specialised scholarships are highly competitive and an achievement in itself to receive.

Here is a selection of Queensland’s 2023 tertiary scholarship recipients.

Marist College Ashgrove

Eight old boys from the college’s Class of 2022 secured scholarships in excess of $431,000. The college, nestled in the prestigious north Brisbane suburb of Ashgrove, charges $14,330 tuition per year for Years 11-12.

• Cadell Hendrikse – Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship

• Jack Morrison – QUT Faculty of Engineering Dean’s Award for Design

• Henry Warren – QUT Dean’s Scholarship

• William Johnson - QUT Excellence Scholarship (Academic)

• Patrick Gilbert - QUT Excellence Scholarship (Academic)

• Zac Apelt - UQ Academic Excellence Scholarship

Anglican Church Grammar School

The East Brisbane school, which comes with a yearly price tag of $27,016 for Years 7-12, has a whopping 11 scholarship students.

• Matthew Bond – UQ Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship

• Peter Chuan – Melbourne National Merit Scholarship

• Aaryan Khagram – Bond University Excellence Scholarship

• Chun Lee – UQ Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship

• John Lu – Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship (The University of Melbourne)

• Luca McLoughlin – Ausenco Engineering Scholarship

• Nicholas Penklis – UQ Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship

• Manny Samios – Griffith University’s Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship

• Tom Scott-Newman – UQ Merit Scholarship

• Jayden Yun – Sydney Scholars Award (University of Sydney)

• Andrew Zhang – UQ Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship

Padua College

The Kedron school on Brisbane’s northside was led by its College Captain in the scholarship department. Its 2023 tuition fee for Year 12 stands at $8220.

• Samuel Martin – University of Queensland’s Liveris Academy Undergraduate Scholarship. He was included in The Courier Mail’s 2022 High Achievers feature and always planned to study chemical engineering at UQ.

Toowoomba Anglican School

Two scholarship beneficiaries from the Class of 2022. The school, west of Brisbane, charges $17,117 for a Year 12 education.

• Jade Salisbury received a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) and was the sole recipient of the Doug Porter Health Sciences Scholarship to The University of Queensland’s St John’s College.

• Lily Kruger received a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science Excellence Scholarship to Bond University.

Brisbane Girls’ Grammar

Three scholarship recipients for the River City elite school, which comes with a $28,555 annual tuition price tag for Years 7-12.

• Ellen Manique – University of Southern Queensland’s Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship

• Sarah Small – Queensland University of Technology’s Budding Entrepreneur Scholarship

• Shanna Heath – Griffith University’s Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship

Rockhampton Girls Grammar

The central Queensland school, with a modest $10,175 tuition fee for Year 12, had its Dux lead the way with a $20,000 tertiary scholarship over four years.

• Mirae Ries will be attending James Cook University in Townsville through its Deans’ Scholarship program. Mirae will study a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours). The scholarship is automatically offered to students who achieved an ATAR between 95 and 97, with Mirae scoring above 96.

St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School

The school, situated in the affluent Brisbane suburb of Ascot, comes with a $27,135 price tag for Year 12. It registered two scholarship beneficiaries.

• Charlotte Hoey – Bond University’s Leadership Scholarship to study Bachelor of Law

• Mia Reinhardt – Bond University’s Excellence Scholarship to study Bachelor of International Relations/Bachelor of Law

St James College

The College, situated in the heart of Brisbane CBD, but with an affordable price tag of $7680 annual tuition for Years 7-12, had two outstanding scholarship recipients last year.

• Shanthoss Neelarmstrong was accepted into Swinburne University in a Bachelor of Engineering. He is a Sri Lankan asylum seeker and received a full scholarship.

• Taha Ghadiri came to Australia as an asylum seeker from Iran. He will go into a Bachelor of Physio at UQ with a full-tuition scholarship after achieving an adjusted ATAR of 98.5.

Stuartholme School

The independent Catholic girls school in Toowong in Brisbane set its 2023 tuition fee for Year 12 at $23,454. One of its Class of ‘22 graduates secured a scholarship.

• Ashley Rolfe – University of Queensland’s Ramsey Undergraduate Scholarship for Advanced Humanities and Western Civilisation Major.

Brisbane Grammar School

The independent, non-denominational boys school located in Spring Hill in inner-city Brisbane charges $29,780 annual tuition for Years 7-12. It had nine scholarship recipients.

• Harry Dickson – University of Queensland’s Vice Chancellor Scholarship

• Sam Taylor – UQ Merit Scholarship

• Will Motley – UQ Chartwell’s Scholarship and UQ Merit Scholarship

• Jacob Duncan – UQ Vice Chancellor Scholarship

• Punula Jayalath – UQ Merit Scholarship

• Tom Macpherson – UQ Vice Chancellor Scholarship

• Nick Marshall – Griffith University’s Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship

• Josh Cory – Australian Catholic University Scholarship to study Bachelor of Law/Western Civilisation

• Alec Donald – UQ Excellence Scholarship

Villanova College

The Roman Catholic boys school in Coorparoo on Brisbane’s southside, which charges $12,719 per year in their senior school, guided their co-Duxes to ATARs of 99.90.

• Lachie McGregor and Callan McInerney both received the Griffith University’s Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship. They both have aspirations of becoming doctors.

Loreto College

Two graduates from the neighbouring Loreto College in Coorparoo received $54,000 in tertiary assistance between them. It charges $12,516 for Year 12.

• Ruby McCarthy – QUT Excellence Scholarship to study Elite Visual and Performing Arts, valued at $30,000.

• Claire Jukes (Dux of College) – Griffith University’s Sir Samuel Griffith scholarship, valued at $24,000.

Somerville House

The elite independent South Brisbane girls school, which comes with a Year 12 tuition price tag of $26,520, celebrated a prestigious and unique scholarship success.

• Lila Chappell – the recipient of the 2023 Judith McCulloch Academic Scholarship, which is awarded to a student on achievements and proven excellence in the field of science. She will be officially recognised at The Women’s College Academic Dinner & Alumnae Awards in March.

An ambitious state school student who has benefited from the University of Queensland’s financial assistance and mentorship for several years already

Shayne Parsons – UQ Young Achievers Program Scholarship recipient. She will become the first in her family to attend university. Shayne will study a Bachelor of Education after being inspired by her teachers. The UQ program has supported her for several years after she began living independently at the age of 16.

Redlands College

A sole half scholarship recipient for the school situated east of Brisbane and charging $9980 per year tuition for Years 10-12.

• Daniel Eban – Bond University 50 per cent Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship to study a Bachelor of Actuarial Science.
