Australia's Best Teachers Will Madden

Teacher Will Madden had only been at his new primary school a few weeks before he and the students in his class knew something special was happening.

But it wasn’t until two of his pupils penned a letter to “Mr Will” that he realised the true impact he was having on their lives in and out of his Grade 5/6 classroom.

Shalom Sengogo and Max Rinder, both 10, wrote to him as part of News Corp Australia’s upcoming Australia’s Best Teachers campaign, which will shine a light on the wonderful work our teachers do.

Their letter read:

“Dear Mr Will, where do we start? You are the most amazing teacher we could ever asked (sic) for, you are kind, funny and approachable. Just like playing footy is special to you, you are special to us.

“You understand that each of us needs different things to learn and grow.

“We love that you show that making mistakes are OK. This makes us feel comfortable and supported. Thank you for being our favourite teacher.”

Mr Will, 25, said he felt honoured to receive such a heartfelt letter in his first term at St Brendans in Flemington. He said recognition is never expected but it does inspire educators.

“It solidifies the reasons why you do it and inspires you to continue making the kids the best versions of themselves — not just academically, but as people,” he said.

“It is the best job.”

Mr Will is following in the footsteps of his grandparents, who were also teachers, and has had placements in multiple schools, including in the Tiwi Islands.

He said he feels respected in his role because of positive feedback and messages of thanks from students and parents.

Principal Kellie Noonan was not surprised when she read the warm sentiments in the letter to Mr Will.

“Will’s positivity, warmth and high emotional intelligence has enabled him to build relationships with every child in his care,” Ms Noonan said.

“As a teacher and a man, he’s an incredible role model for our children.”

Following the successful launch of Australia’s Best Teachers last year, the 2024 campaign will launch in April and is committed to elevating the status of teachers across our nation and commemorating their profound influence on their students and the wider community.
