Gold Coast housing prices skyrocket

Three houses are to be demolished to make way for a 32-storey tower under plans that would transform a Southport street.

The medium-rise building, named Malua, is earmarked for a site on Norman Street, just a block back from Marine Parade.

Malua will have 151 units across 27 residential floors, with a mix of one to three-bedrooms per unit. Plans also include a three-level podium and a rooftop pool.

The project has been put forward by a company linked to Sydney-based businessman Michael Simmons.

According to documents lodged with the council, the tower’s design is inspired by a 1980s-era Lamborghini Countach sports car.

It replaces a previously approved 14-storey tower which was to have 68 units.

“The proposed development seeks to resolve financial viability issues of the existing development approval by providing a higher density development with a more favourable unit mix and streamlined design, therefore offering additional housing supply and increased diversity to the central Gold Coast suburb of Southport,” a report lodged with council reads.

“Level 32 features the communal open space area whereby residents have access to a large recreation (gym) room, work from home and conference room, pool and pool deck, outdoor shower, two BBQ areas, a fire pit and external recreation area.

“The communal open space area has been oriented to the east and north to take advantage of views to the Broadwater and to maximise access to natural sunlight and sea breezes.”

The proposed project is close to the 36-level Sky Broadwater tower on the corner of North St and Marine Parade which backs onto Norman St.
