North Queensland coach Paul Green urges Cowboys to learn line and keep rein on Jarryd Hayne

COWBOYS coach Paul Green has told his charges not to get dazzled when Parramatta magician Jarryd Hayne reaches into his big bag of tricks.

COWBOYS coach Paul Green has told his charges not to get dazzled when Parramatta magician Jarryd Hayne reaches into his big bag of tricks at 1300SMILES Stadium on Saturday.

The Eels’ talisman has mesmerised National Rugby League defences this year.

Sweeping in from behind the attack, Hayne’s injections into the play have been key to Parra’s shock start to the campaign and will have North Queensland on red-alert.

Asked yesterday how they planned to stop him, Green’s response was refreshingly honest.

“It’s a tough question,” he said.

In truth, no one in the NRL has worked out how to completely nullify Australia world cup winner Hayne when he is in form and in 2014 he is arguably the best of his career.

He is top 10 in the league in tries scored and line breaks, while he is second for tackle busts.

But, just as importantly, his presence causes confusion in defenders, who aren’t sure whether to commit to tackling him or hang back. Hayne then thrives on the indecision.

Green said remaining composed and keeping straight line would be the directive to his defence.

“Jarryd Hayne’s got a lot of tricks in his bag — he can ball play, he can run, he can kick — so we’ll certainly have our hands full with him,” Green said.

“It’s important that we hold our line.

“Guys like him and (halfback Chris) Sandow are looking for defenders to come out of the line, so it’s important that we hold our line and keep working hard underneath the ball.

“We’ve got to keep working for each other there.”

And that extends to the edges.

News_Rich_Media: The Wests Tigers have pulled off a remarkable 21-18 victory against a gallant Parramatta at ANZ Stadium in front of a crowd of more than fifty thousand people.

With Hayne central, the Eels’ back three are among the most devastating in the league after seven rounds, scoring 66 per cent of the teams tries (19 of 29).

Fijian freight train Semi Radradra leads the way, with an NRL-best 10 tries.

“They’re certainly very good, they get (Parramatta’s) go-forward going very well,” Green said.

The Cowboys are desperate for victory after a two-win, five-loss start to the campaign and Green said he was pleased with his team’s preparation following a “crisp” final training session.

But he is hoping a dose of Anzac spirit adds further fuel to the fire ahead of tonight.

The team had lunch with members of the Army yesterday afternoon, where the soldiers told inspirational stories about their time on the front line.

“Townsville’s a garrison city, we’ve got a lot of armed forces up here, so I think it means a bit more to our community — days like Anzac Day and Remembrance Day,” Green said.

“So, for us, I think it’s about playing our part in that and hopefully doing our supporters proud.”

Further to the Anzac celebrations, the Australian Army battle the Palm Island Skip Jacks as a curtain-raiser to today’s game, with kick-off at 1.20pm.
