US politics live: California Governor says Trump turning dictator after arrest call

The spat between Donald Trump and California’s Governor keeps escalating, with the President now suggesting his counterpart should be arrested.

"We're going to have troops everywhere": Trump deploys 2,000 to L.A.

Welcome back to our coverage of US politics.

Donald Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom are in an ugly war of words after the US president suggested he should be arrested.

Mr Newsom said the remarks were an “unmistakeable step toward authoritarianism”.

It comes as riots and protests have rocked LA following heavy handed immigration raids across the city.

While the situation calmed on Sunday night, there are fears Monday, US time, could bring more violence.

Mr Trump has threatened to call up serving troops if necessary – condemned by Mr Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass.

An Australian reporter has been caught in the crossfire.

Channel 9 correspondent Lauren Tomasi was reporting live on the protests when police shot her with a rubber bullet, causing her to recoil in pain.

“You just f***in’ shot the reporter!” a voice off camera shouted in true Australian fashion.

It was one incident of minor violence among many.

Yesterday President Donald Trump ordered the National Guard to intervene, against the wishes of Mr Newsom and Ms Bass, who felt it would needlessly inflame the situation.

The local police department has declared parts of the protests unlawful, and announced that multiple arrests have been made.

On Sunday, Mr Newsom formally demanded the National Guard be withdrawn.

“I have formally requested the Trump administration rescind their unlawful deployment of troops in Los Angeles County and return them to my command,” Mr Newsom said.

“We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved. This is a serious breach of state sovereignty, inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed.

“Rescind the order. Return control to California.”
