‘Not enough money for Meghan’: Prince Harry explains his resentment towards King Charles

Prince Harry claims his father was jealous of Meghan Markle and detested having to financially support the couple because she grabbed “the limelight” like Princess Diana.

The Duke of Sussex has revealed the seething resentment he harbours for his father who encouraged him not to marry, insisting the royal family didn’t have “enough money” to support his wife Meghan Markle.

In a damning claim in his memoir Spare that lifts the lid on his life as a royal, Prince Harry writes King Charles III warned him there was no money in the pot for another wife as he was “already having to pay” a lot to support his youngest son, along with Prince William and Kate Middleton.

“Pa didn’t financially support Willy and me, and our families, out of any largesse,” Harry, 38, alleges in the autobiography. “That was his job. That was the whole deal.”

Harry writes that he and his older brother, 40, “agreed to serve the monarch” and keep their hands and feet “inside the gilded cage at all times” in exchange for financial care, according to US publication Page Six.

However, the Invictus Games founder claims King Charles, 74, was not genuinely worried about the money but was jealous of Ms Markle’s burgeoning popularity.

“Pa might have dreaded the rising cost of maintaining us, but what he really couldn’t stomach was someone new dominating the monarchy, grabbing the limelight, someone shiny and new coming in and overshadowing him,” the royal writes.

He noted that the then Prince Charles had “lived through that before” when he married his first wife – Harry’s late mother – Princess Diana.

Prince Harry also maintains the Prince of Wales echoed his father’s reservations about marrying Ms Markle and moving “too fast” and poured scorn on his excitement the brothers and their wives would “become a foursome” because she “she was an American after all.”

As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex became more serious, Prince Harry told Prince William he felt like their late mother, Diana, helped him “find” his new love – which didn’t sit well with his brother.

“William took a step back and told me and told me I was taking things a bit too far,” he writes after the pair got engaged in 2017 after a year into their relationship.

His older brother, he claims, shot down the idea of the newly engaged couple getting married at Westminster Abbey, where he and Princess Catherine had married seven years earlier.

He also didn’t want the pair to choose St. Paul’s cathedral, where Princess Diana and King Charles wed in 1981, because it was apparently “too grand” for their nuptials.

Their wedding plans increased tensions between the warring couples.
