Israel-Iran conflict: Iran reacts after US ‘obliterated’ key nuclear sites

In a Pentagon briefing, United States Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth said the US had evidence the strike on Iran’s key nuclear sites was an “incredible and overwhelming success”. Follow the updates.

The United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain in bracing for an attack after President Donald Trump declared an unprecedented American bombing raid “completely and totally obliterated” Iran’s key nuclear facilities.

More than 40,000 US troops are stationed within striking distance of Iran, as the world buckles up for a potentially drawn out conflict in the Middle East unless Iran abandons its plan to build nuclear weapons.

Aircraft carriers based in Bahrain may have as little as 15 minutes to prepare for ballistic missile attacks from Iran, while US forces in Kuwait, Iraq , Qatar and the United Arab Emirates were also on high alert.

Iran warned there would be “everlasting consequences ” for Mr Trump’s bold attack, which has dragged America into its third war in the Middle East in 25 years.

In a strategic deception, Mr Trump told the world he would allow Tehran two weeks to agree to abandon its nuclear aspirations while American stealth bombers were already covertly bound for the Middle East armed with “bunker buster” GBU-57 bombs.

They launched a surprise early morning attack, along with Tomahawk missile strikes from US nuclear powered submarines.

The targets were three of Iran’s military facilities at Isfahan, Natanz and Fordow, considered to be the crucial pillars of county’s efforts to build a nuclear weapon.
