Thousands of people spilled into the Vatican to be a part of history as the body of late Pope Francis was carried into St Peter’s Basilica. These are some of the most touching photos.

Pope Francis’s appeal went far beyond those within the Catholic church, as could be seen by the tens of thousands of people who turned out to pay their respects to the deceased 88-year-old pontiff.

Mourners from far and wide poured into St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday as the body of Pope Francis was moved to the Vatican City’s St Peter’s Basilica from the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta.

Church bells solemnly tolled, some gathered broke into respectful applause as the large crowd looked on at the significant historic event.

The importance of Wednesday’s events were written on everyone’s faces, with plenty of people shedding tears as the Pope’s open coffin was carried through crowds and eventually placed inside St Peter’s for three days of lying in state.
