Barack Obama’s speech was full of his usual soaring rhetoric - though with one less-than-subtle exception.

Welcome to our coverage of the Democratic National Convention in the United States.

Day two has now wrapped up. It featured speeches from former president Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff.

“I don’t care how you identify politically, whether you’re Democrat, Republican, independent or none of the above,” Mrs Obama said in her address, probably the highlight of the night.

“This is our time to stand up for what we know in our hearts is right. To stand up, not just for our basic freedoms, but for decency and humanity. For basic respect, dignity and empathy. For the values at the very foundation of this democracy.”

Yesterday, President Joe Biden received a warm reception from the DNC, having thrown his support behind Ms Harris after deciding to withdraw from the race a month ago.

“She will be a president our children can look up to. She will be a president respected by world leaders. She will be a president we can all be proud of,” he said of Ms Harris.
