Woman’s car ploughs into water at the Sovereign Mile at Paradise Point

A woman is lucky to be alive after her car ploughed into waters on the northern Gold Coast.

Police and paramedics were called to the Sovereign Mile at Paradise Point just before 9pm on Friday.

Gold Coast Superintendent Brett Jackson said residents reported a vehicle had left the road and entered the waters off the Sovereign Islands.

“The female occupant, who was the sole occupant, was able to exit the vehicle and swim safely to a nearby pontoon where a number of members of the public helped her,” he said.

When police arrived at the scene officers conducted a road side breath test on the woman which allegedly showed a positive result.

Superintendent Jackson alleged this initial test returned a “substantial” reading.

The woman was taken to hospital and a sample of blood was taken to determine her blood alcohol content.

If the sample returned a positive result, Superintendent Jackson said the woman could face charges such as driving while under the influence of alcohol or possibly more serious offences.

“It was a near miss for that driver,” he said.

“This lady has luckily survived.

“It could have easily been another fatality to the state’s road toll and we don’t want to see that on the Gold Coast.”

It comes after 10 lives were lost on the weekend across Queensland.

Superintendent Jackson said the state’s road toll had risen to 158 lives lost, compared to 161 this time last year.

“These are lives that we don’t want to see lost and it’s a tragedy for all families involved,” he said.

“We urge road users to drive to the conditions and adhere to the speed limits … and to not driving while intoxicated by any alcohol or drugs.”
