Western Downs embraces recycling

A FORTNIGHTLY recycling service across the Western Downs has successfully seen residents move into the recycling fold.

A NEW fortnightly recycling service rolled out across the region by Western Downs Regional Council six months ago has successfully seen residents move into the recycling fold.

Western Downs residents have been leading the way in recycling with a large amount of materials collected at council landfills in the region.

Since council introduced the new waste collection service residents have already recycled 802 tonnes of recyclable waste - the equivalent to one football field filled with recyclables to a height of two metres.

Environment and Health spokesman Councillor George Moore congratulated residents for the positive commitment they had demonstrated to recycling.

"Through their efforts residents have actively reduced the amount of recoverable material that ends up in our local landfills and in the process reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills," he said.

Cr Moore said despite the great start there was room for improvement.

Western Downs Regional Council advises that recyclable items should be placed loosely in the recycling bin and never tied up in a plastic bag.

As well, council encourages residents to avoid placing food or garden waste, ceramics or other types of glass in their recycling bin to ensure the recyclable material remains uncontaminated and is easily sorted.

Western Downs Regional Council currently provides a fortnightly recycling service to residential households, business houses and commercial services.
