Violent offender Jason "Waxy" Nixon finds new way to escape jail - appearing in court to answer for more crimes

QUEENSLAND'S most feared killer and former prison escapee has found a new way to get out of jail - and there's nothing the authorities can do about it.

QUEENSLAND'S most feared, dangerous and deadly killer and escapee - who has a never-to-be-released order stamped on his prison file - faced never setting foot out of jail for the term of his natural life.

But Jason "Waxy" Nixon, 42, has proven he can get out of prison to spend time with family and friends anytime he wants - by committing crimes of violence behind bars.

Nixon - who has spent only 18-weeks of his adult life outside of prison - is serving an indefinite jail sentence for the violent slaying of double prison murderer Mark Day in the exercise yard of the state's most secure cell block - Wacol's Sir David Longland (SDL) Correctional Centre's Maximum Security Unit.

His list of infamous crimes is long and includes the brutal and violent 1993 murder of equally violent inmate Bart Vosmaer and his notorious 1997 prison break from SDL alongside notorious "Postcard Bandit" Brenden Abbott, two other convicted murderers and a rapist.

He also received a 20-year jail term for firing a shotgun during a struggle with two detectives, one who he attempted to murder, who captured him at a luxury Sunshine Coast resort 15-days after the escape.

Before last week Nixon had not set foot out of prison for almost a decade, but the simple act of throwing two cups of urine at a prison guard and a nurse was all he needed to secure a get-out-of-jail-free-for-a-day card to visit his family.

Under Queensland law a prisoner - even high risk inmates like Nixon - has the right to decide if he wants to appear in court for sentencing of indictable, or serious, criminal offences.

On Wednesday Nixon exercised that right by electing to appear in the Brisbane District Court in person, rather than via videolink, so he could plead guilty to unlawfully wounding one prison officer and seriously assaulting another.

Senior legal sources yesterday told The Courier-Mail there was no real need for Nixon to appear in person, but that he had specifically asked to appear so he could "have a day out and see the family."

That decision resulted in a massive and expensive ramped-up security operation in and around Brisbane's QEII Courts of Law building and all roads leading to and from the prison.

Up to a dozen specialist police, all of them dressed in street clothes, and Corrective Services staff crammed inside Court 10 so NIxon, dressed in fully body restraints, could have his day in court and also a quick chat with his mum.

The hearing took less than 20-minutes and had no real impact on Nixon's fate - despite the fact he received a three-and-a-half year sentence to be tacked on to his never-to-be-released status.

With the sentence over, Nixon's mum leapt to her feet to show her son fresh family photos she had taken on her mobile phone.

Nixon, who looked extremely happy and sported a broad grin, then turned to greet his sister, Kylie, and a group of mates - all members of The Finks outlaw motorcycle club.

Before being led out of court, Nixon raised his shackled hands aloft with both thumbs raised and yelled: "Take care? Thanks for coming."

Nixon, known in jail as "Waxy" for his love of surfing, will be almost 64-years-old when he is entitled to his first legally mandated review of his indefinite jail sentence in 2034.
