Alice Springs residents were thrilled to cool off in the Todd River on Christmas Day after ex-Cyclone Ellie filled the dry creek bed.

Residents have since taken to Facebook to share photos and said the fast-flowing river was a “sight to behold”.

“Lots of fun for me and the dog,” Maciek Mazurek wrote.

“This is the best, enjoy the true beauty of the Alice,” Michelle Vignoni said.

Residents’ excitement spread across social media.

“For those who wonder why this might be worth posting about, keep in mind that the Todd river is mainly a dry river bed,” Amanda Markham wrote on Twitter.

Others took to Instagram to share their snaps.

Alice Springs recorded 19.4mm of rain on December 23, and a further 15.6mm on Christmas Day.

It continued to pour on Boxing Day as the region recorded 10.6mm of rainfall.

The Bureau forecast further showers in the region for the remainder of January’s first week.

The forecast said Alice Springs residents could expect up to 15mm of rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, and less than 2mm on the weekend.
