A woman has bravely fended off a gang of teens armed with a machete after they tried to steal her car at a Dandenong service station on Sunday evening.
Crysta Healey, 29, was filling up her car at a BP on the Princes Hwy near Potter St about 6.30pm last night when a white Ford EcoSport with no licence plates pulled up behind her.
She went into the store to pay and as she was returning to her car, she was confronted by three males, at least one of whom was armed with a machete.
Ms Healey said the offenders yelled “give me your keys” but she refused.
“(I) kept holding on to the keys and he just hit me,” she said.
She was struck on the arm with the machete during the scuffle.
Ms Healey said she retreated to a room in the service station to compose herself while she waited for police to arrive.
Officers described the attack as “low, dirty and cowardly”.
The offenders were described as caucasian and aged between 14 and 20 years old.
Detective Acting Sergeant Samuel Douglas said: “(At) 6.35 at night you should be expected to be able to fill up your car with fuel without being attacked.”
“They’ve obviously realised that she wasn’t as soft a target as they would’ve liked so they’ve then gotten into this vehicle and taken off,” he said.
“Unfortunately this is the common issue for the area.
“A week doesn’t go by where we don’t investigate something of similar nature, and I understand that’s statewide”.
The first male was wearing a black hooded top with the hood up, tan coloured trousers, white socks and black thongs with a white Nike logo.
The second male was wearing a grey hooded top with the hood up and draw strings tied tight across his face, a dark-coloured face mask, dark-coloured cap, black puffer vest, black trousers, black socks and striped Adidas thongs.
The third offender was wearing a light coloured/grey hooded top with hood up, a dark-coloured beanie, grey tracksuit pants with a logo on the upper left leg and white runners.
A fourth offender remained in the driver’s seat of the Ford SUV the duration of the incident.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
