A woman behind a terrifying alleged daylight murder attempt on a woman who was out for her morning run on Friday has faced Melbourne court for the first time.

Twenty-nine-year-old Sarah Lazzari-Wegener was brought before the Bail and Remand Court on Saturday after the alleged attack on a 24-year-old woman who was jogging along Merri Creek Trail in Fitzroy North.

Ms Lazzari-Wegener, who sat quietly in the dock while the magistrate went over the forensic assessment, did not apply for bail.

The court heard that it was Ms Lazzari-Wegener’s first time in custody.

The incident occurred on the popular and busy running trail at around 10.45am, with a number of passers-by coming to the aid of the woman sending her alleged attacker fleeing.

Ms Lazzari-Wegener was quickly located by police a short time later still in the area, while her alleged victim was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries.

It is not known if the women were known to each other and if it was a targeted attack.

The alleged incident happened on the same morning that a man out for a morning run in Reservoir was also attacked in what appeared to be an unprovoked random attack.

The 24-year-old man had not long returned from an ANZAC Day Dawn Service when he went for a jog along Spring Street just a handful of kilometres away from the Merri Creek attack.

He was allegedly ambushed by a stranger who stabbed him in the abdomen and sliced him across his chin and neck.

The victim then ran more than 150 metres while bleeding heavily from his wounds to a petrol station to get help.

He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries where he underwent emergency surgery and is now in a stable condition.

The offender in that attack remains at large.

Ms Lazzari-Wegener will front Melbourne Magistrates Court for a committal mention on Tuesday, 22 July.
