Some of the nation’s most popular brands of car are generating the highest number of calls for roadside assistance.

Toyota Corollas, Holden Captiva, Toyota Camry, Mazda 3 and Nissan X-Trail topped the list, according to Bupa’s new data on vehicle call outs.

The latest figures likely come as frustrating news for road users, many whom found themselves broken down on the side of the road due to flat batteries.

Engine failure, flat tires and running out of petrol also ranked as some of the most commons reasons for roadside assistance.

Bupa General Insurance general manager Shannon Orbons said roadside assistance callouts increased statewide during the summer.

“Car breakdowns can happen to anyone at any time, and many are preventable, so it’s important to ensure your car is road fit before you drive off,” he said.

“We want our customers to be safe on the road and I encourage them to check the simple things like ensuring they have enough petrol in the tank, that their tyres are not bald and have enough air pressure and that the car has enough oil and water.

Meanwhile, the average driver spent just under $62 a week on fuel, adding up to over $3,200 annually.

Millennials were found to spend the most on fuel — a total $78.04 each week — while Baby Boomers spent about half of that, as per figures from Compare the Market.

Gen Z drivers forked out $72.33 each week while Gen X spent a similar $70.54.

Compare the Market’s Chris Ford suggested drivers compare bowser prices on fuel comparison apps to help reduce costs.

“Households across Australia are continuing to feel the pinch. Inflation is cooling, but that doesn’t mean things are cheaper – they just aren’t increasing as fast as they were a year ago,” Mr Ford said.

“And fuel is one of our core grudge payments each week. It’s something that most of us need to get to and from work, get the kids to school, or go grocery shopping for the week, so we often just need to bear and grin it no matter what the price is.”

He recommended regular services to help improve fuel efficiency.
