Teen seriously injured after falling from roof of moving car at St Andrews Beach

An 18-year-old is in hospital with serious head injuries after falling from the roof of a vehicle being driven in the St Andrews Beach carpark.

An 18-year-old is in hospital with serious head injuries after falling off the roof of a moving car on the Mornington Peninsula.

Police were called to Paradise Drive in St Andrews Beach at about 6.50pm on Sunday.

Police have been told five 18-year-old men were inside a Holden Cruze while another two 18-year-old men were on the roof of the vehicle.

The car was travelling in the carpark on Paradise Drive at low speed when one of the males slid from the roof and hit the road.

The incident occurred during schoolies week.

The teen suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, but he is now stable.

Local residents in and around St Andrews Beach have expressed their shock and surprise upon learning of the incident late on Sunday.

Many locals said they were first alerted to the commotion when an Air Ambulance landed at the St Andrews Beach Recreation Club, waiting for about an hour and a half before the injured 18-year-old was flown to hospital.

One resident said they were a “bit shocked” that something like Sunday’s incident could happen in what is usually such a quiet suburb.

“For this area, it’s the most unusual thing to happen,” they added.

St Andrews Beach is dotted with holiday homes and short term rentals, about 10 minutes drive from Rye Beach.

Police have since confirmed they seized the blue Holden Cruze as part of their investigation into the incident.

The driver, from Glen Waverley, has been charged with multiple offences including driving in a dangerous manner causing serious injury, reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, driving in a dangerous manner and careless driving.

He has been bailed to appear before Dromana Magistrates’ Court on January 22.
