A 16-year-old accused of driving a stolen car at speeds of up to 200km/h and almost smashing into another vehicle has been granted bail.

Police observed a car allegedly travelling at up to 200km/h along the Princes Highway through Narre Warren about 3.35am Thursday morning.

Most of that highway is an 80km/h zone.

The car was then tracked through Berwick on the Princes Freeway, again reaching speeds up to 200km/h.

Police allege the Mercedes, which was stolen during an aggravated burglary from a Coachella Way home in Berwick, narrowly missed crashing into an innocent driver on Wheelers Park Drive.

Heroic officers successfully slowed the vehicle using stop sticks along Clyde Rd before the Mercedes jumped back on the freeway.

The allegedly stolen car was dumped near the Stud Rd exit along the Monash Freeway at Dandenong North.

The dog squad assisted in the arrest of a boy in a nearby reserve.

That is likely to have occurred in the Dandenong Creek Reserve or wetlands area near Dandenong Stadium.

The boy was charged with a series of offences, including theft of motor vehicle, reckless conduct endangering life, drive at dangerous speed and learner driver unaccompanied.

He was granted bail to face a children’s court at a later date.

Teenagers allegedly driving stolen cars at high speeds have had fatal and disastrous consequences across the city.

An unlicensed 17-year-old allegedly behind the wheel of a stolen car remains accused of slamming into innocent motorcyclist Davide Pollina in August.

Mr Pollina died from that collision before the accused driver was allegedly caught steering another vehicle while in possession of a machete.

Ashburton man William Taylor also lost his life after a teenager allegedly driving a stolen car crashed into his vehicle last year.

A boy, who was 17 at the time of the crash in July, was allegedly behind the wheel of the stolen Jeep travelling at speed before it killed Mr Taylor.

The Herald Sun on Thursday revealed the force’s Operation Trinity spent 140,000 policing hours hunting young car thieves and burglars across the city.

Members from the dedicated operation arrested 688 offenders more than 1600 times in 2024.
