A suspicious blaze has significantly damaged a local Football and Netball Club in Melbourne’s southeast.
Firefighters responded to calls that the Mt Waverley Football and Netball Club was engulfed in flames just after 5am on Saturday.
Fire crews arrived at the Mayfield Dr clubhouse to see billowing smoke and flames burning through the roof of the building.
No one was injured in the blaze, which took 30 firefighters almost an hour to bring under control.
It is unclear exactly what started the fire, however Victoria Police are investigating.
The fire at the clubhouse is the second in a matter of weeks to destroy a local sporting club, with another suspicious blaze in Glen Waverley only weeks prior.
The nearby Glen Waverley Hawks Cricket Club was destroyed by fire on April 16, in an early morning blaze at Capitol Reserve.
The club was also left extensively damaged and were left to call upon community support, to help restore the building which housed over 40 years of the club’s history.
The attack left the club “heartbroken” and searching for $16,000 in donations to rebuild.
“This space has been our home since the 1980s – a place where cricket has brought families, friends and the wider community together for over four decades,” the club said in a statement at the time.
“It also serves as the winter home for our friends at the Glen Waverley Soccer Club, making this a shared loss for both clubs and the broader sporting community.
“While we are devastated, we know the strength of our community will carry us through … your support means more than ever right now.”
At this stage it is unknown if the two fires are linked.
