Police are investigating after a bus carrying a dozen passengers hurtled into two Safety Beach holiday homes on Wednesday, leaving the properties severely damaged.
A 17-year-old male passenger and the driver, a 44-year-old man, were taken to Frankston hospital with non life-threatening injuries after emergency services freed the 12 commuters travelling on the 788 bus to Portsea about midday.
Acting Sergeant Steve Newland said it was “very lucky” that no-one was inside the two wrecked properties during the crash.
“The vehicles took a lot of the brunt of the impact. The driver was wearing a seat belt and we’re very lucky that these houses are believed to be holiday houses and no one was inside,” he said.
“I’m led to believe there were two off duty nurses at the scene helping out until emergency services arrived.”
It is believed a cement truck travelling on Prescott Ave collided with the bus on Marine Pde, causing it to crash through the front fence of a Prescott Ave home before clipping its roof.
The bus then careered through another fence before landing in the middle of the living room of a Dromana Pde home.
The 32-year-old male truck driver was uninjured and is assisting police with their inquiries.
WorkSafe is also set to investigate the cause of the crash and no charges have yet been laid.
Sharon, the mother of the teenage boy taken to hospital, said several of her son’s teeth had been knocked out during the crash.
“It was pretty chaotic, lots of emergency services on site, fireys, ambos, a lot of police controlling the traffic,” she told 3AW.
The house belonging to Ringwood man Tim Green suffered the most damage, with Mr Green receiving a call at work saying the bus, with its windscreen and doors smashed in, had landed in his living room.
“I’m wondering how the hell has that happened … but anything is possible,” he said.
“It’s very lucky that it wasn’t during a summer weekend or holiday period because normally there are cars and people everywhere because the beach is so close.
“We actually just had the roof repaired from a storm not long ago.
“There’s a lot of damage there.”
Tim’s family has used the house as a holiday home since his father built it in 1974.
Andrew Cornwall, managing director of Ventura Bus Lines, the operator of the bus, said it was a relief no one was seriously injured.
