A cowardly driver who left a pedestrian “for dead in the gutter” after they struck the man and drove off in a brutal CBD hit-run is being sought by police.
The victim, a man visiting family from China, was crossing a city street before a Subaru Liberty smashed into him in West Melbourne about 10pm on May 30.
Graphic CCTV footage shows the driver allegedly failing to brake before he cleans up the 30-year-old as he crossed the road near the intersection of King and Batman streets.
The crash left the Chinese national with two broken legs and he was on Saturday afternoon still recovering in hospital.
One of his legs was broken in two places and has since undergone surgery.
Highway Patrol officers say the driver would have known exactly what they had done before making the spineless decision to continue driving.
Senior constable Mitchell McWilliam said the driver of the Subaru failed to hit the brakes.
“They know they’ve hit the pedestrian and have made the conscious decision to leave the scene of the accident,” he said.
“The person that has done this knows that they have done this. I’d like to have them have a really hard think about what type of person that makes them, to leave someone for dead in the gutter.
Sen Con McWilliam said the victim had planned to spend time with family on his brief holiday to Australia.
“Now he’s stuck in hospital with some pretty life-changing injuries,” he added.
“It’s pretty low.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
