Two young men allegedly led police on a wild 100km pursuit, flinging items from their getaway car after threatening an innocent man as they attempted to steal a vehicle.

A Patterson Lakes resident called police after he found the men trying to break into a car in Hannalore Ave about 10.30pm on Tuesday.

The resident attempted to follow the pair in his own car, but they allegedly rammed his vehicle, before threatening him with a weapon.

Police chased the car as it raced down the Peninsula Link, EastLink and the Monash out to Altona.

The older model Toyota was reportedly travelling at speeds up to 150km/h, with its occupants throwing items from the vehicle.

It then took a dramatic U-turn back to the southeastern suburbs.

Detectives deployed stop sticks in Chelsea before the duo continued south on Nepean Highway.

As police closed in, the pair drove into the Frankston police station carpark and got out of the stolen vehicle with their hands up.

The males, aged 17 and 20, are currently assisting police with their inquiries.

They will be interviewed in relation to conduct endangering life, make threats to kill and theft of and theft from motor vehicle offences.

Anyone who witnessed the driving of the blue older model Toyota or with dashcam is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
