A man has been saved from a treacherous cliff face and rising tide in a dramatic rescue operation on the Great Ocean Road.

Police responded to reports of a 20-year-old man trapped on a rocky ledge beneath the cliffs of Jan Juc near Ocean Boulevard and Cantala Drive on Sunday at about 2.30pm.

Vision from the scene shows the man perched on the cliff face as savage, foaming waves lashed the rocks below him.

Police arrived on the scene, with an officer descending from a police air wing helicopter to join the man on the cliffs.

The man was strapped to his rescuer before being winched to safety at about 4pm.

The helicopter landed on top of the cliffs, where the man was assessed by paramedics for minor injuries.

A police spokesman said it was unknown how the man had gotten stuck or what he was doing on the rocks prior to the rescue.

Jan Juc is a popular surfing and tourist destination just south of Torquay, with proximity to the world famous Bells Beach.

The waters off Jan Juc Beach have been no stranger to tragedy in recent months after the drowning of 49-year-old Sydney woman Gita Platthy in April.

Platthy and a friend had travelled down to Victoria for the Rip Curl Pro surfing competition.

Her body was recovered from the water near the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club on Saturday, April 26 at about 1pm.
