Tennis ace Thanasi Kokkinakis has given fresh hope to prospects of a Special Ks reunion at the Australian Open in 2026.

“We’re definitely trying to make it happen,” Kokkinakis told Confidential. “We tried to do it last year, but we were both injured, both of us, so we didn’t get a chance to put on the show. But seeing the atmosphere and the support and the crowd get behind us is special. And that’s why we so desperately want to come back and play.”

The Special Ks – Kokkinakis and firebrand Nick Kyrgios – stole the show at previous Melbourne Grand Slams with a mix of hi-jinx and high quality tennis.

“It’s a little bit different to the traditional old school tennis atmosphere,” Kokkinakis said of the duo’s popularity.

“We bring a bit more energy, a bit more atmosphere, we’re also young so we can relate, although we are getting a bit older. A lot of fans can relate and it looks like we’re just having fun out there.”

Kokkinakis said playing the AO, as a singles or doubles competitor, is “the best feeling in the world.”

He added: “Once a year, we can play in front of our fans and just have that energy and atmosphere. Summer in Melbourne is the best time of the year and so many people are up and about.

“So to have them up, rowdy and cheering, there’s no better feeling.”

Kokkinakis attended a VIP event in Melbourne earlier this month for Altos, the official tequila partner of the Australian Open.

It comes after Lleyton Hewitt also reflected on his love for the Australian Open, which he started playing as a teenager.

The Australian tennis legend helped launch Emirates’ partnership with the AO in December, alongside Collingwood star Josh Daicos, in Richmond.

“I was fortunate to play 20 Australian Opens straight, starting out in 1997 as a 15 year-old,’’ Hewitt said.

“It’s something as a player you never expect... it’s pretty special.

“We’re very fortunate to have it just over there and we love our sport in Australia. I love AFL, the AFL boys love tennis, golf, cricket season as well.”

Hewitt and Daicos were joined by guests including Jessie Murphy, Hannah Dal Sasso, Brooke Warne and Tayla Broad as Emirates marks 12 years as the AO’s official airline.

Their marquee in January will have a Dubai theme — the all-ages playground and will transform into a desert dreamscape.
