Former federal Liberal MP Katie Allen has revealed she has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that “has already spread”.

The news comes just days after her hopes of a return to federal parliament in the inner eastern electorate of Chisholm were dashed, with Labor’s Carina Garland clinching victory with a 9725-vote lead.

Dr Allen, a former pediatric allergist and gastroenterologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital on Thursday night took to social media to share the devastating cancer news.

“I’ve recently been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer – cholangiocinoma. It’s a stage 4 diagnosis and has already spread,” she wrote.

“I know there are difficult days ahead, but I’m facing this with clarity and determination.

“As a doctor, I’ve stood beside many patients and their families during moments like this. I’ve seen incredible courage, dignity and strength in those facing adversity – and I’ll be drawing on those examples now, as I walk this path myself.”

Dr Allen, who served as the Member for Higgins from May 2019 to May 2022, said she felt “immense gratitude” for the love and support she had been shown by friends and family.

“I’ve been fortunate to serve both as a doctor and in public life, always with the hope of making things better for others,” she said.

“Now, I face a different challenge. But I will meet it with the same qualities that have always guided me: practical resolve, quiet strength, and above all, hope.”

Cholangiocinoma is a rare, aggressive type of cancer that forms in the bile ducts.

Dr Allen’s post was met with well wishes from several colleagues, including Kooyong Liberal candidate Amelia Hamer and outgoing Menzies MP Keith Wolahan.

“I am so sorry to hear this Katie. Sending love, support and strength your way,” Ms Hamer wrote.

“You are deeply loved and admired. We are here for you and your family,” Mr Wolahan said.
