One of two men who allegedly broke into a Altona North home on Monday has been charged while his alleged accomplice remains on the run from police.

The pair allegedly smashed their way into a single-storey home on Mangan Court with axes late on Monday, attacking a man inside the house.

A 36-year-old Altona North man sustained minor wounds and a 34-year-old Point Cook man also inside the home at the time managed to escape without injury.

Police believe one of the occupants inside the house followed the pair back outside the house and confronted them with a weapon.

One of the alleged burglars — a 21-year-old Truganina man — took himself to hospital with an apparent stab wound.

He was arrested and interviewed by detectives on his release.

He has since been charged with home invasion, recklessly causing injury and assault with a weapon.

He has been bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 20.

The second man remains “outstanding” according to a Victoria Police spokeswoman, adding investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
