A Frankston South home where a man’s body was found after a fierce blaze had been empty for months until a few days ago, say shocked neighbours.
Emergency services responded to calls of a house fire on Goldborough Ct in Frankston South about 6.40pm on Sunday.
A man’s body was found inside the home after firefighters had extinguished the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains unknown however a crime scene has been established.
Katie, who lives in a nearby street was shocked to find out a body was discovered in the house.
The man’s identity has not yet been revealed.
Katie said while she had chatted over the fence with a man who lived in the house, she did not know him well.
“He had been away for months and the house was empty,” she said.
“Then, a couple of days ago the shutters went up and we thought he must be home.”
Katie said her family was counting their blessings after initially being told it was their house on fire.
“We were out and a neighbour rang and told us our place had gone up,” she said.
“My husband rushed home but when he got there he found it was the house behind us.
“We’re really lucky it didn’t spread.”
Neighbour Chloe Morgan said she had been alerted to the fire after noticing smoke.
“I thought it was bizarre that someone would be burning off,” she said.
“I walked out to see what was happening and the whole house was just engulfed in flames.
“I’ve never seen a house fire like that before it was so fast and intense…it didn’t take very long for the whole roof to cave in.
“There was no car in the car port or the driveway so I assumed no one was home. Now learning that someone was, that plays on your mind a bit.”
Another neighbour Haley Moa, who also saw the fire, said she had been unaware someone was in the house.
“Finding out the news that someone was found is devastating,” she said.
“We didn’t even know someone was in the house – it was too late to even approach.
“The house was just like crackling on fire and we were like ‘oh my gosh’ and it just got worse and worse.”
The latest death follows a tragic fire in St Albans, where one person was found dead about 2:40 AM.
The cause of that fire is also under investigation, with an arson chemist scheduled to examine the site later today.
