“Following a feeling”.

That’s how Maddy Herbert says her soul-pop band Velvet Bloom goes about its business.

“Our intention is to make someone feel those emotions as well and make sure they leave the show with a feeling,” said lead vocalist Herbert, who performs alongside drummer Nic Morton, guitarist Alex Markowitsch, and keyboard player Miguel Hutton.

Soon those feelings will be coming to Bustard Town, Darwin, as part of the band’s 23-date national tour.

From 8pm May 16, the band will perform its new 11-track self-titled album, which has been more than three years in the making.

“We’ve always wanted to create something that is meaningful to us and that is a long body of work,” Herbert said.

The decision to come to the Northern Territory was not a difficult one for the band, Herbert said.

“I used to live on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, growing up and not a lot of music would come through that area, so I’ve always had a love for creating events in rural areas,” she said.

“When I was young, my mum had taken us around Australia in a caravan, and I really loved Darwin when we travelled there with her.

“There was so much that was special about it: the landscape, the weather, the people, and the markets.”

If anything at all, Herbert said, bringing creative arts to the Top End was the most important thing.

“It’s important to get out to these regions if you have the ability to do so,” she said.

“Sometimes these are your best audiences too, because there’s a real appreciation that you’ve made the effort to travel … and that’s what we’ve felt in a lot of the place that we go to that are not on everyone’s tour circuits.

“As long as people have a good experience, that’s all that matters.”

Herbert said she invited Territorians to message them on Instagram with recommendations on where to go when they arrive.
