Work is well underway on converting the former-Sunland Plaza shopping centre into one of Australia’s largest hotel venues, Twin City Hotel, where a recruitment campaign kicked off over the past week.
Job advertisements have revealed further details about the exciting Star Group project, which added the $6 million 8000sq m centre in Thuringowa Central to its portfolio of over 40 venues across Australia in 2022.
The Star Group is seeking an “energetic, bubbly, and enthusiastic” gaming attendants, qualified chefs/cooks, and a duty manager to take up roles in the multifaceted hospitality precinct, which boasts “a 500 seater buffet, a huge indoor/outdoor beer garden, sports bar and bistro”.
“Twin City will also showcase a relaxing cafe and lounge bar, alongside a state-of-the-art gaming room with some of Australia’s newest gaming technology … with 45 brand new gaming machines,” the advertisement said.
“Twin City Hotel aims to offer something for everyone, somewhere you can bring your family for a buffet feast or meet your mates in the beer garden for a couple of Sunday sundowners.”
In a now-deleted reference in their job advertisement, Star Group said it would be “opening the doors to its 1500 capacity live music hall and functions centre early in 2024”.
A job advertisement from June said the venue’s music hall would have a 1000 person capacity.
A visit to the site on Friday revealed a carpark packed with tradie’s vehicles and construction equipment as work continued on the plaza and an adjoining restaurant building fronting Hervey Range Rd.
A part of the old supermarket will be converted into a Star liquor warehouse.
Star Hotel Group managing director Steven Shoobridge previously told the Townsville Bulletin that the hotel would open in three stages, providing four different food options.
“We will have five bars and large food spaces which can be used for special events and entertainment — tribute shows and things like that,” Mr Shoobridge said.
“I’m very happy to invest in Townsville on the basis that people will support great initiatives. We want to provide entertainment that people don’t have to travel into the city for.”
It is unclear when the venue would officially open.
The Star Group was approached for comment.
