The man accused of murdering a Wadeye man outside a busy Woolworths supermarket complex will stand trial in a matter of weeks.
At the NT Supreme Court on Friday, Justice Jenny Blokland ruled Jeremy Cooper would go to trial on July 7, with three weeks scheduled for the matter.
Mr Cooper is accused of murdering a 36-year-old Wadeye man near the Darwin City Woolworths, just after midnight on September 16, 2023.
It was alleged an argument between Mr Cooper and the deceased man’s brothers sparked the incident.
The Wadeye man was allegedly stabbed in the chest with a knife, and died in hospital.
Mr Cooper was arrested 60 hours after the fatal stabbing and was charged with murder.
On Friday, Mr Cooper’s lawyer, Jon Tippett, said he expected the trial to come to an early conclusion.
“I don’t think it will go for three weeks,” he told the court.
“Certainly it will go for two.”
The prosecutor agreed.
“My view is that two weeks will be more than sufficient.”
It was heard CCTV footage of the alleged murder would also be presented to the court, with a translator also to appear in support of the deceased man’s family.
