North Queensland police have released more details about the identity of two drivers involved in a horror crash on the Bruce Highway early Thursday morning, as they call for anyone with information to come forward.

Ingham Police Acting Senior Sergeant Regina Veivers said two vehicles had collided head-on on the notorious stretch of the highway at Bemerside, near Seymour creek between Ingham and Cardwell just after 6am on Thursday.

Emergency services arrived on scene at 6.20am and extracted both occupants out of the wreck.

She confirmed that a 21-year-old Cairns man travelling south in a red Hyundai Elantra had been flown by Queensland Government Air (QGAir) rescue helicopter in a critical condition to Townsville University Hospital.

A Townsville Hospital and Health Service spokeswoman said the man remained in a “critical” but stable condition.

Snr Sgt Veivers said the second man, a 67-year old from Ingham, was seriously injured.

Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed the man had been transported by road to Ingham Hospital.

He was driving a blue Holden Barina hatchback.

THHS said the man, who had been transferred to TUH, remained in a serious, but stable condition.

Initial investigations by the Forensic Crash Unit has found that the blue Barina was travelling northbound along the Bruce Highway when it collided with the red Elantra.

Investigations are continuing. Witnesses with dashcam footage are urged to contact police.

The horrific accident closed the Bruce Highway causing a substantial build-up of traffic.

Some court matters in Ingham were adjourned as defendants were unable to attend court.

The road has since reopened.

The crash is being investigated by the Forensic Crash Unit.

The stretch of highway north of Ingham is one the most notoriously dangerous parts of the Bruce Highway, was heavily scrutinised during the recent ‘Save our Bruce’ campaign carried out by the Townsville Bulletin, NRMA and other News Corp publications.

More to come.
