By name and by nature, Debbie Graves lives for Halloween.

The Mount Louisa resident goes all out each year with elaborate decorations to add some thrills and scares to her neighbourhood for some jovial fun.

The British expat said moving to Townsville six years ago allowed her to bring her dreams, or should that be nightmares, to reality.

“The houses I lived in England, I couldn’t put up the big displays,” she said.

Ms Graves loves the dressing up and decorative element to the day.

“What’s not to love? Since I was a little girl, I loved all things spooky,” she said.

This year she has created a walk-through experience which has been designed to be COVID-safe at her St Ives Street home.

“I have gone for a different lay out. I’m trying to keep on touch with social distancing, with a one way system,” she said.

“I’ve got a couple of friends helping out, using barbecue tongs to hand them out.”

On another health note, Ms Graves is offering children lolly alternatives.

“There’s all sorts, there’s lollies, some little chocolate bars and little toys. And I’m going to do a little tangerine or apple with a glowstick in them,” she said.

The star decoration at Ms Grave’s home this year will be a massive 7-foot pumpkin.

To set the scene for a night of trick or treating, Townsville City Council will host a Halloween movie night tonight.

Two spooky family favourites, Casper and The Addams Family, will be shown as part of North Australian Festival of Arts.

Community and Cultural Development Committee chairwoman Ann-Maree Greaney said this was the perfect chance to get the family together to enjoy Halloween movies on the big screen.

“Council will have food and popcorn vendors at Peggy Banfield Park, but I’d encourage everyone to bring their own picnic and a blanket to get comfy on,” she said.

“There is capacity for about 700 people, so head down early to avoid disappointment.”

Casper starts at 6.30pm and will run until 8.20pm, while The Addams Family will kick off at 8.30pm and run until 9.55pm.

Queensland Police urge people to download posters on the mypolice.qld.gov.au website to clearly show if they were welcoming or not to trick or treaters.

Gatherings are limited to 40 people in homes and outside.
