Police allege the woman, now 90, was walking in the underground carpark near Woolworths when she was struck by a black ute.

It is further alleged that the impact caused her to fall and strike her head on the ground, and that Casey failed to remain at the scene, leaving the carpark at speed.

The woman spent months in a serious but stable condition in hospital with head injuries.

In March, Queensland Police offered a $50,000 reward to locate the driver of the ute.

Casey didn’t enter a plea when he appeared for the first time in Townsville Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Legal Aid lawyer Abbey Huckstep confirmed that Casey had collected the necessary paperwork to lodge a legal aid application.

Magistrate Viviana Keegan agreed that applying for legal aid was the right course of action given that “imprisonment was well within range” as a potential punishment.
