A TOWNSVILLE school previously on the brink of closure has now thrown its door open to more students and is looking to expand.
Carinity Shalom Christian College in Condon now has eight prep students and a Year 7 class due to become its first graduating class in 2024.
Principal Sharyn Ives said the school was growing in numbers.
“We’re also growing in the right way, it’s about growing spiritually and emotionally and not just about numbers,” she said.
“We want to succeed and secure a future for our school and that’s the difference, because it’s not just growing in numbers … we’re creating a strong foundation.
“The plans are to look towards what other buildings we can open up around the school, moving into secondary because we currently have year 7s accessing the primary area.”
Carinity, a subsidiary of Queensland Baptists, announced in October it had purchased Shalom Christian College from Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod.
Carinity operates four special-assistance high schools for more than 375 students at campuses in Brisbane, Nikenbah, Rockhampton and Gladstone.
In November 2017 the Bulletin revealed the Uniting Church would only offer primary education in 2018, ceasing its role as an indigenous boarding school.
About 85 staff lost their jobs as a result of the closure.
The school’s growth meant they were now seeking more staff.
Principal Ives was previously the deputy at the school after being the head of teaching and learning since 2011.
The school is refurbishing existing buildings and have acquired three new airconditioned 12-seater buses for students.
“Potentially because Shalom is such a large property we have the room to grow to 300 (students) if we had them, so the capacity is there and we are welcoming new parents,” she said.
“Our doors are open.”
