Townsville’s RSL Sub Branch has issued a blistering statement in the wake of Mayor Troy Thompson’s misleading claims of military service.
“The Townsville RSL Sub Branch embrace the principles of courage, sacrifice, and integrity. We expect these values to be upheld by all veterans, especially those in positions of prominence and influence,” the statement said.
“Exaggerating or fabricating military achievements for personal gain, is completely
unacceptable and goes against everything we stand for.”

Mr Thompson this week thanked “all those veterans who have supported me, all the services, the army (and) the heads of army”.
The RSL Sub Branch said while everyone’s service history was important, it could not support those who embellished their history.
“All veterans should be proud of their service. However, people that lie and overstate their military service, for personal or any other gain, do not have our support.”
“The Townsville RSL Sub Branch Board, believe misleading claims of military service for recognition, benefit, or advantage – is unacceptable and seriously undermines genuine veterans and their sacrifice,” the statement read.
“Townsville veterans have given life and limb, their physical and mental health, serving Australia. Misleading claims of military service are not only dishonest, but are deeply disrespectful to those who have genuinely served Australia.
“Such actions undermine the honour and integrity of our veterans and their sacrifice.”
