A North Queensland man repeatedly phoned and wrote letters to a woman he was jailed for strangling from prison.

A TOWNSVILLE man with an“atrocious criminal history” of repeated domestic violence offending has appeared in court from prison after he made phone calls and sent letters from his jail cell to a woman he got locked up for strangling and choking.

The 25-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons pleaded guilty to 42 charges in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Tuesday, including 36 contraventions of a domestic violence order.

The court heard the man was sentenced to three years imprisonment in the District Court last month after he choked and strangled the woman in 2019.

Between February and May this year the man made 36 calls from the Townsville Correctional Centre to the woman and sent two written letters, breaching a court order in place.

Magistrate Viviana Keegan said the man had an atrocious criminal history that was primarily of violence and breaching DV orders.

“This poor woman. There is something seriously wrong with how you behave,” Ms Keegan said.

“At what point does it sink in,” she said.

The man was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for each charge, served concurrently.

He will be eligible for parole in September.
